X-rays were negative on Michigan State guard Kalin Lucas, the school announced on Wednesday.
Lucas sprained his ankle in the second half of No. 5 Michigan State's 67-49 loss to No. 16 Wisconsin on Tuesday night in Madison. He is day to day with his status for Saturday's game at Illinois uncertain.
The school says Lucas's status for Saturday's game will depend on how the ankle responds to treatment, and that won't be known until at least Thursday.
He was the Big 10 Player of the Year last season and leads the team in minutes played per game, points and assists, and, for good measure, he's also the best 3 point shooter. He's never really missed any time before, so the other players don't have much experience playing without him.
The Spartans have a tough road game coming up on the road against Illinois this Saturday night, and then a really tough home game 3 days later against Purdue. After that, they have a 4 day break before going on the road at Penn State. You have to assume that Tom Izzo would be cautious and make sure Lucas is healthy for the tournament if there is any risk. Considering how much is at risk, I am assuming he'll be rested against Illinois as a precaution and brought back for Purdue if it turns out not to be a big deal.
